The supergravity rotating bed drives technological advancements in distillation, leading to the development of highly efficient distillation equipment – the application of supergravity rotating beds in the pharmaceutical industry. The baffled supergravity rotating bed has been evaluated and approved by relevant experts; this technology is at an internationally advanced level. Based on the radial effective length through which gas and liquid pass, at a rotational speed of 1000 r/min and a total flow rate of 600 L/h, it is possible to achieve a separation capacity of 20 theoretical plates per meter. A three-layer BZ750-3P baffled supergravity rotating bed with a diameter of 830 mm and a height of only 0.8 m can achieve 15–20 theoretical plates, which is sufficient to meet the requirements for the distillation and purification of conventional organic compounds. The baffled supergravity rotating bed marked the first time in the world that a single supergravity rotating bed was used in an industrial continuous distillation process. One of its uses is in the recovery of alcohols such as methanol and ethanol. A chemical company in Zhejiang used a BZ750-3P baffled supergravity rotating bed for methanol recovery; this device has a rotor diameter of 750 mm, with three rotor layers. The outer diameter of the housing is 830 mm, and its height is 800 mm. Feeding takes place between the second and third layers – the upper two layers serve as the distillation section, while the lower layer functions as the stripping section. Continuous distillation was employed, with a methanol mass fraction in the feed of 70 %. The product yield was 500 kg/h; the methanol mass fraction in the resulting product was 99.8%, while the methanol mass fraction in the waste liquid was less than 0.2%. This reduced the concentration of methanol released into the environment and minimized pollution. It can replace traditional packed towers with a tower diameter of 600 mm and a height of around 10 m, **reducing the height of the equipment and its volume, thereby saving resources. The process conditions required for a baffled supergravity rotating bed are the same as those for tower equipment; a schematic diagram of the process flow is shown in the attached file Distillation Process Diagram.jpg (103.3 KB) 09-1-15 12:48. The start-up and shutdown of a baffled supergravity rotating bed are very convenient, with start-up taking only about 10 minutes. The bypass-type supergravity rotating bed requires minimal maintenance; only the mechanical seal needs to be replaced annually. Industrial production has clearly shown that a baffled supergravity rotating bed with a shell height of 0.8 meters achieves a separation efficiency comparable to that of a packing tower over 10 meters high, yet its floor area is less than 2 square meters. This significantly reduces the size of the production equipment, decreases the land required by the factory, and enhances production safety. Figure 4 shows the operation site of a three-layer baffled supergravity rotating bed distillation unit in actual production. The equipment can be installed in a single-story building and operated there, eliminating the need to address issues such as lightning protection, typhoons, earthquakes, and work at heights that are associated with traditional tower equipment; as a result, it is highly popular among pharmaceutical manufacturers. In simple terms, the advantages of this equipment are its high distillation precision, the ability to carry out aseptic operations indoors, which makes it very suitable for use in pharmaceutical manufacturing; it also enables continuous distillation, eliminating some of the drawbacks associated with traditional rotating packed beds. It is also very suitable for materials that are thermosensitive and have high viscosity. The drawback of this equipment is that the annual production capacity of a single unit is limited to 10,000 tons; however, this amount is sufficient to meet the needs of pharmaceutical companies
