What is the difference between air expanding into the upper tower and nitrogen expanding into the upper tower? Which one is better? The use of expanded air in the upper tower is quite common, with oxygen from legacy sources being the primary source ; Nitrogen expands into the lower column; this is mostly a full liquefaction process aimed at producing liquid oxygen. I haven’t heard of nitrogen expanding into the upper tower. (For reference)
I have seen liquid nitrogen being fed into the upper column as a reflux fluid, but I have not seen nitrogen expanding into the upper column

The air expansion process involves feeding the expanded air into either the upper or lower tower, while nitrogen expansion refers to feeding nitrogen into the lower tower. This approach is commonly used in processes requiring fully liquefied nitrogen products at various pressures, with the main outputs being liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, and nitrogen products at different pressure levels. They are all classic; there is no such thing as which one is better. The choice depends mainly on the product requirements when organizing the process.
