For tanks storing lightly contaminated oil, an internal floating roof design is suitable and poses no problems. However, when such tanks are used as cleaning tanks for gases such as nitrogen, it is important to know whether these gases can enter the tank and whether this has any impact on the safety of the floating roof. Personally, I think using an internal floating roof for tanks containing lightly contaminated oil is a viable option, and line cleaning is also an acceptable solution. However, when sweeping, be careful not to use too much force; a pressure of 2–5 kilograms is sufficient. Keep the temperature below 100 degrees, as higher temperatures may damage the sealing strip. If steam purging or steaming is required for tank cleaning or pipeline work, the medium inside the pipeline can first be purged using nitrogen, after which blind flanges can be installed before proceeding with steam purging of the pipeline or tank. (Note: Nitrogen itself is an inert gas, and it is often used for protection during storage and transportation. )
Scanning is generally done by using a scanning tube that moves upward into the tank, which effectively prevents safety accidents caused by fluctuations in the floating disk
Based on our practical production experience, for tanks storing lightly contaminated oil, conventional dome-shaped tanks can be used, with hydraulic vent valves retained on the tank tops. Additionally, such tanks should be equipped with an alkali absorption tank with a capacity of around 10–20 cubic meters; a pipeline is connected from the mechanical vent valve on the tank top to this alkali absorption tank, thereby absorbing acidic gases such as H2S.
For tanks with light contamination, dome tanks can be used, with an upper limit set by the cleaning system. Try not to use floating pads; the high nitrogen pressure is entirely controlled by the operator’s experience in regulating the cleaning pressure. If this control is not proper, the floating pad can become deformed or tilted, and it may suffer from oil accumulation, tearing, or sinking. I have been exposed to all the situations mentioned above, so I still recommend using dome tanks. :)
