This post was last edited by jordan569 on 2013-1-6 22:44 The Dow Chemical Company of the United States and Sudchem AG of Germany announced last week that they will cooperate in the research and development of new technologies for converting syngas into basic chemicals. Joint research focuses on the development and production of catalysts for the conversion of syngas to chemicals and the direct conversion of syngas to olefins, with work being conducted at Dow's Terneuzen production site in the Netherlands and at Süd's catalyst research and development centers in Germany and the United States. Dow and Southern Chemical Company will work out the terms of joint research and development within a few months and plan to come up with a preliminary plan in April 2009. As a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, syngas can be produced through the gasification and conversion of a wide variety of feedstocks, including coal, biomass, natural gas and waste products. With existing technology, syngas can be converted into basic chemicals, plastics, electricity and transportation fuels, but current investment and conversion costs are too high. said Dow Vice President, Hydrocarbons and Basic Plastics Business: "Nowadays, oil and natural gas are used as raw materials. Dow is exploring new ways to reduce its dependence on oil and natural gas. We are using these raw materials to produce chemicals and plastics.
