Our facility’s oil tanks have received two batches of Jet A-3 fuel, in roughly equal quantities – about 2000 tons each. The additives used in both batches are the same; the first batch was not hydrogenated, with a specific gravity of around 0.79, while the second batch was hydrogenated, giving it a specific gravity of around 0.81. We noticed that the fuel in the tanks has separated into layers, and to a significant extent. Could this be due to the fact that one batch was hydrogenated while the other wasn’t? What causes oil stratification?
This problem seems to be quite common, and it has nothing to do with whether hydrogenation is performed or not. In the past, this was a problem with oils from different refineries; now it is quite common. In my opinion, it has something to do with both crude oil and the production process! ! ! :handshake :victory:
These two batches of oil indeed do not come from the same refinery. Could you explain in detail on the second floor how stratification is related to crude oil and the processing processes?
In such cases, the oil products need to be blended by adding lighter oils to the tank; this way, the samples taken will be more representative. This kind of situation occurs frequently in oil depots. Different refineries use different processes, which results in significant differences in density. The oil processed at one refinery is straight-run diesel, while that from Jinshan Petrochemical is a lighter grade of oil produced through catalytic cracking
The mixing time must be ensured; generally, it should be 4 hours
Isn’t there too many layers? There’s a small portion below; I’ve encountered this phenomenon before, mainly due to the presence of other different components
Is it because of the different densities that stratification occurs?
