Good companies do not lay off employees easily, as this would significantly damage their corporate image. It is true that many companies are under pressure due to economic conditions, but there are also those that, in order to maintain high profit levels, resort to firing employees outright. Such companies focus only on immediate gains, and they are actually very poor companies. When things are going well, employees get no benefits; and when the economic situation deteriorates, it’s always the lowest-ranking employees who actually do the work who suffer the consequences. This is all too common in China these days. Some of the so-called foreign companies and private enterprises in China simply do not link employees’ personal development with the company’s growth – they hire people only to use them as cheap labor in certain positions.
