Can a single-pass plate heat exchanger be modified to a multi-pass one? Is the modification method difficult? Can 304L sheet be welded?
It can be modified – simply by adding a few number plates and making adjustments to the movable plates. If done by a professional manufacturer, it’s quite easy; however, it’s not so simple for non-professional manufacturers, as they may make mistakes regarding the process and the orientation of the connections. Corrosion in plate heat exchangers usually takes the form of pitting or stress corrosion, resulting in large pinholes or tiny cracks. If there are only a few such areas, TIG welding can be used for repairs; but if there are many such areas, welding isn’t necessary – it’s better to replace the entire unit.
