According to some books, normalizing, also known as normalizing treatment, is a metal heat treatment process in which the workpiece is heated to 30–50°C above Ac3 or Accm, held at that temperature for a certain period of time, and then taken out of the furnace and cooled in air or by means of water spraying, misting, or air blowing. Another definition is that normalizing is a heat treatment method in which steel is heated above its critical temperature to cause it to transform entirely into uniform austenite, and then it is cooled naturally in air. May I ask if it is possible to cool it with water?
Normalizing involves natural cooling; if water is used for cooling, then it would be considered quenching. It still depends on the cooling temperature – whether it exceeds the critical cooling temperature. Water quenching is not possible, as it will result in a hardened layer with insufficient strength; the steel grade can be changed instead. If water quenching is used, only the hardness will increase while the strength will not.
In principle, water quenching is also an option, but it’s important to control the cooling rate properly; if it’s too fast, a hardened layer will form.

Water definitely won’t work; spraying, followed by blowing and then air cooling, can be used. Is the normalizing treatment of your manganese steel container a post-weld heat treatment or a heat treatment of the steel plate itself? It cannot be exposed to water; exposing it to water is known as quenching, and if there are relevant requirements, tempering must also be carried out
The watering mentioned here does not mean continuously spraying water until cooling is achieved; rather, after coming out of the furnace, water is sprayed in a watering area to speed up the cooling process, after which cooling takes place by air. The cooling method is usually air cooling (natural cooling in still air), but wind cooling (using compressed air or a blower to force convection of air) as well as spray cooling (using compressed air to atomize water as a cooling medium) can also be employed. For extra-thick steel plates or forgings (with a thickness δ ≥ 200 mm), water-accelerated cooling normalizing can also be used. The above can be used as a reference.
Pressure vessels are permitted and suitable for thicker sheets of metal. . For such structural components, if the carbon content is unknown, it cannot be too high!
