Space velocity refers to the ratio of the amount of feed entering the reactor per hour to the catalyst volume in the reactor. There are mass velocity and volume velocity.
If both the feed rate and the catalyst inventory are expressed in terms of mass, it is called mass space velocity. If all are expressed in terms of volume, it is called volumetric space velocity. The magnitude of the airspeed reflects the length of the reaction time. They are inversely proportional. However, the reciprocal of the airspeed can only reflect the length of the reaction time relatively; it is not the actual reaction time, which is why it is also called pseudo-reaction time.
