The second cooling stage is primarily used to recover methanol from the light components. When the load on the first cooling stage is too high, the phase change at the top of the pre-distillation tower becomes excessive, resulting in negative pressure; this causes the light components to rise upward and disrupts the distillation equilibrium.
The functions of the two condensers in the pre-tower are as follows: The primary condenser is used to condense the majority of the methanol in the gas phase, allowing it to enter the reflux tank, while the light components remain uncondensed. Therefore, the condensation temperature is controlled at around 63 degrees; if it is too high, it can increase the load on the secondary condenser and lead to greater losses, whereas if it is too low, the light components will be condensed and returned to the system, failing to achieve the goal of removing them. Secondary condenser: It condenses the uncondensed methanol and light components from the primary condenser, sending them to the extraction tank in order to recover methanol and obtain a by-product—methanol oil

Secondary condensation involves condensing the gaseous fraction that was not condensed in the primary stage. This prevents overcooling from cooling the non-condensable gases, and it also avoids waste resulting from excessive temperatures that prevent the gaseous components in crude methanol from being condensed and vented!
