Ammonia synthesis is a volume-reducing reaction, and increasing the pressure facilitates the production of ammonia; therefore, increasing pressure is theoretically beneficial for ammonia synthesis. Currently, large ammonia synthesis plants (with an annual production capacity of over 300,000 tons) all use low-pressure ammonia synthesis technology. Low-pressure ammonia synthesis is characterized by stable operation and a long production cycle ; The overall energy consumption is also slightly lower than that of high-pressure ammonia synthesis ; At the same time, through measures such as improving the structure of the internal components and increasing the catalyst loading, the net ammonia yield remains comparable to that of high-pressure ammonia synthesis; the adopted technologies can ensure that the net ammonia yield is greater than 16% (v%).
The ammonia synthesis process consists of several units; it’s not clear which one is being referred to. For desulfurization, the pressure is generally 0.5 MPa, while for shift reaction it is 0.8 MPa; there are also cases where the pressure is 2.1 MPa
