As the name implies, a grounding wire is the connection between the object to be grounded and the grounding plate. A grounding electrode is a metal element buried underground in contact with the earth, having very low resistance to the ground; it is usually made of iron plates or iron pipes. To achieve a low grounding resistance, different grounding electrodes have specific requirements – there are regulations regarding the surface area that must be in contact with the earth, as well as corresponding specifications for the grounding resistance and the cross-sectional area of the grounding wires.
