What is HCN, how is it produced, and what are its physical properties?
Hydrocyanic acid – Physical properties: Main component: Pure substance. Appearance and characteristics: Colorless gas or liquid with a bitter almond odor. pH: Melting point (°C): -13.2 Boiling point (°C): 25.7 Relative density (water=1): 0.69 Relative vapor density (air=1): 0.93 Saturated vapor pressure (kPa): 53.32 (9.8°C) Heat of combustion (kJ/mol): No data available Critical temperature (°C): 183.5 Critical pressure (MPa): 4.95 Logarithm of octanol/water partition coefficient: 0.35 Flash point (°C): -17.8 Ignition temperature (°C): 538 Upper explosive limit (% V/V): 40.0 Lower explosive limit (% V/V): 5.6 Solubility: Soluble in water, alcohols, ethers, etc. Primary use: Used in the manufacture of acrylonitrile and acrylic resins, as well as pesticides and insecticides. Production methods: 1. Terbutanol, urea condensation, hydrolysis method; 2. Terbutanol, hydrocyanic acid method; 3. Isobutylene, hydrocyanic acid, methanol method; 4. Methyl tert-butyl ether, hydrocyanic acid method; 5. Isobutylene amination method
It is a highly toxic acidic gas that turns into hydrocyanic acid when dissolved in water.
It should be hydrocyanic acid; it’s highly toxic. Carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen elements in coal produce small amounts of this substance when exposed to high temperatures. I’m not entirely sure about the exact mechanism by which this occurs, so I’d like to ask everyone for their insights
From a professional perspective, during the gasification process, N2 + H2O + 2CO ----> 2HCN + 3/2 O2. This post was last edited by Shanghai Longge on 2009-2-9 at 16:01.]
