Our company is building a caustic soda plant. The design department recommends using butterfly valves, as they are inexpensive and lightweight. The liquid caustic soda storage tanks are 10 meters high (with a concentration of 30% or 50%). The pumps required have a head capacity of 20 meters for handling clean water; they should be stainless steel pumps. The maximum operating temperature is 60 degrees. Which type of butterfly valve would be suitable? Should it be a hard-sealed or soft-sealed version? Should it be a center butterfly valve, a single-eccentric butterfly valve, a double-eccentric butterfly valve, or a triple-eccentric butterfly valve? Additionally, the storage tanks have a diameter of DN200, while the other components have diameters of DN150 and DN125. Please advise us on this matter
First, temperature is a key factor to consider. There are differences in price as well as performance among center butterfly valves, single-eccentric butterfly valves, double-eccentric butterfly valves, and triple-eccentric butterfly valves. The performance of single-eccentric valves is similar to that of center-line butterfly valves; double-eccentric valves represent an improvement over single-eccentric valves, while triple-eccentric valves represent another level of improvement built on the foundation of double-eccentric valves. For caustic soda media, ordinary cast steel valves are sufficient; of course, three-eccentric valves are the best option, but they are more expensive. Additionally, ball valves or globe valves are preferable for bottom valves in tanks, as they provide better sealing performance.
Original poster, for this application an imported butterfly valve lined with PTFE should be used. I have plenty of experience with caustic soda, so there will be no problems
I wonder if the original poster is under a lot of stress? If not, it would be better to use a fluorinated butterfly valve with a centerline design! It’s cost-effective. Butterfly valves with a double or triple eccentric design have a longer production time and are more expensive (but can handle higher pressures). I agree with the opinion above. In addition to operating temperature, pressure, and medium properties when selecting valves, the operating frequency also needs to be taken into consideration. If the operating frequency is high, it is recommended to use metal-sealed butterfly valves. The sealing grade for double-eccentric valves is usually V level, while triple-eccentric valves can achieve a VI level; however, their price is much higher than that of conventional butterfly valves.
In terms of valve selection, the best option is a butterfly valve with a plastic lining – it is cost-effective and there is no need to worry about corrosion issues.
