No one wants to take unnecessary detours, but it’s not possible to avoid them. For example, when producing olefins from natural gas, why does one have to first produce gas, then methanol, and only afterward generate olefins? Of course, many people are currently trying to produce aromatics using one-step or two-step methods, but it’s quite difficult~! At present, there is no possibility of industrialization at all; with methanol, it’s at least possible to achieve industrialization, but it depends on economic viability. This can also be considered an outlet for methanol, after all, currently the supply of methanol exceeds demand overall

Can’t we simply lightly pyrolyze the coal and then purify and separate it? Breaking it into pieces and then putting it back together requires a tremendous amount of energy.
It’s very difficult to produce aromatics directly, mainly due to the poor selectivity of the catalysts
Catalysts for the conversion of coal to aromatics via methanol have been studied; as far as I know, Zn-modified ZSM-5 catalysts exhibit a high selectivity for aromatics. Additionally, the coupling of methanol with toluene and similar compounds to produce p-xylene results in a product that is easy to separate, making it a promising direction for development.
Coal-based aromatics are currently in a period of development; intermediate products are produced first before the final products are manufactured, but the development trend is positive. At present, there is still very little genuine core technical information available. I believe the most important factor is the selection of catalysts, and in terms of catalysts, foreign technologies are still ahead of those in China. There are still few projects for converting coal into oil or gas in our country, but overall, development is progressing rapidly!
