I’ve seen some information stating that, compared to Shell’s coal powder feed, Texaco’s water-coal slurry feed allows for higher-pressure gasification. What is the principle?
It is determined by the liquid properties of water-coal slurry – incompressibility. Coal slurry pumps are generally positive displacement diaphragm pumps that can increase pressure quite easily; their performance is limited only by the pressure tolerance of the equipment. The pressurized transportation of dry coal powder, on the other hand, is much more complex and faces numerous constraints. Important issues such as the pressure of the gas used for transportation and the measurement of the mass of high-pressure solids are difficult to overcome, and the associated risks are much greater
Mainly, water-coal slurry is easy to pump and thus easy to pressurize, while dry powder is difficult to pump; there are yet no single devices (such as pumps) designed for directly pressurizing and transporting dry powder. Pump equipment is the easiest type of device for pressurized feeding.
