To remove hydrogen sulfide from acetylene, a caustic wash using 15% sodium hydroxide is employed; a caustic wash tower is designed for this purpose. What types and materials are generally used for the trays and packing in such towers?
I’ve seen one where hot alkali is used to absorb CO2, with a filler made of material 321.
Different fillers have different filler factors. The smaller the packing factor, the higher the calculated bubble velocity at the saturation point, and the greater the production capacity of the tower. The above is presented for discussion.
Acetylene purification system, alkaline scrubber tower, ceramic structured packing
In response to the original poster’s question: The internal components of the tower can be made of 316L stainless steel, while the packing can be either ceramic or plastic-based, in the form of structured or loose packing.
The washing tower used in PVC engineering is more or less as you described; I’m not sure what the pressure level is in your case. The acetylene purging tower in PVC is made of carbon steel; you can check that.
The caustic scrubbing tower in our company is primarily used for treating liquefied gas. The trays used are plug tray trays, and the material is 0Cr18Ni9
As a supplementary note, the caustic oxidation tower uses Pall ring material, which is also 0Cr18Ni9
In my opinion: filler, ceramic material (or plastic), in bulk
Corrosion-resistant materials generally use ceramics or polymers The filling method can be regular filling, or random stacking! !
Choose 0Cr18Ni10Ti, which is also known as 321
I think it would be better to redesign this filler selection. We are a manufacturer of metal fillers.
For packing, stainless steel packing or ceramic packing is generally used; it is placed in a loose pile format, with Buerle rings being used for stainless steel packing and O-rings for ceramic packing.
Ceramic fillers are used quite frequently here
Which type to use should depend on the design provided by the design institute; different companies use different materials – 304, 316L, and 321 are all used. If it’s a metal material, you can turn to me; we’re able to produce all of them
