I want to build a fuel oil storage tank with a diameter of 37 meters, a height of 20 meters, and a volume of 20,000 cubic meters, for storing 180 and 380 grade fuel oils. What temperature should be maintained by heating during the loading and unloading of these fuels? What heating and temperature maintenance methods are currently used in designs?
Currently, pipeline heating is generally achieved through steam heating, electric heating, or heat transfer oil heating; insulation is used on the outside of the pipelines. Inside large tanks, heating coils are used for heating, and these tanks are also insulated from the outside. As for the heating temperature, raising it too high results in waste of thermal energy – it is sufficient to ensure normal flow of the oil, with a heating temperature of around 80-100 degrees being typical.
For tanks of this size, coil heating is generally used; electric heating elements are a convenient option for providing heat along the pipelines. For voltages of 180 or 380 volts, it’s usually sufficient to maintain a temperature of around 90 degrees within the pipelines, as that’s the optimal operating point. So it’s quite convenient after all
