The face or back side of the flanges shall be in accordance with MSS.SP9. What does “face” refer to in the context of flanges? Literally, \"spot\" means a stain or spot; how should it be interpreted when used on flanges?

Another term related to this was found: SPOT-FACE – a machining process in which the area surrounding a hole is machined into a smooth, flat surface using a rotating tool with cutting edges at its end or surface. (Hole mouth plane: A mechanical processing method used to flatten the area around a hole, with the flat surface being created by using a rotating tool on the bottom or surface of that hole.)
