When working at companies such as CNPC and Sinopec, is education and major important? Is it possible to do a good job in the chemical industry without having a degree or major related to chemistry? To what extent do education, major, and personal skills contribute to success?
The company requires a degree and values a relevant major, as these are necessary conditions for promotion. People who are not majoring in chemical engineering can also carry out this work, as not all positions in chemical companies are related to chemistry.
There is a certain relationship, but it is not the decisive factor; what matters most is an individual’s initiative. Some people may not have a degree in this field or a related one, but if they are willing to learn and work hard, they can still do work in the chemical industry； Even if one has a degree in this field or a high level of education, but is not good at learning through practice and lacks diligence, they will also be unable to do a good job in the chemical industry.
There is a certain relationship, but it’s not absolute. My brother-in-law graduated through a transitional program and started working in the workshops of a local foreign company. Over those 8 years, he worked in the workshops, as well as in the quality control and procurement departments. Now he has changed jobs and his salary is over 10,000. Although he didn’t receive any formal education through that transitional program, he still managed to do well. During this year’s financial crisis, his salary even increased by 2,000. So success is related to opportunities as well as hard work
