How do different manufacturers generally handle the wastewater discharged by automatic backwash filters using amine solutions?
The backwashing of a good automatic backwash filter also contains only solid impurities; it has no amine solution, so there is no loss of ammonia. Therefore, it can be directly discharged to the wastewater treatment plant.
Our sulfur recovery unit’s exhaust gas treatment system is equipped with an automatic backwash filter; the spent amine solution is sent back to the main pipeline and then to the amine regeneration unit, which features an activated carbon filter.
The lean liquid filter in our workshop is an Amaid automatic backwash filter; the wastewater discharged by the filter enters the amine solution system after passing through two stages of sedimentation.
Backwash filters are generally controlled by pressure difference; if there is a lot of debris, backwashing may need to be carried out continuously, which results in greater waste of raw materials. An external backwash option is available
The amine solution discharged from the automatic waste discharge filter usually contains a high amount of impurities and degraded substances. If this liquid is released into the amine system, it will affect the quality of the amine solution. If it is discharged into the sewage system, there will be significant losses of amine solution. To minimize such losses, our factory discharges this liquid into underground solvent collection tanks for recycling.
What size are your filter elements? We used a 50μ filter element, which became severely clogged, resulting in repeated startups for backwashing; eventually, it had to be taken out of use.

The filters we use in the Qingdao large-scale oil refining project perform well – their precision is 25μ. It is ideal for the filtration precision to be below 20μ, and it’s best to use other media to assist with the backwash process
