It is difficult to define materials science itself, as it encompasses many fields that mostly overlap with each other; it can be treated as a distinct field or classified under other disciplines. Therefore, in many universities, the field of materials science exists merely as a specialized area, rather than an independent scientific discipline. The university I attended, although it is part of the 211 Project, established its materials science faculty only in the past two years. At the beginning of its establishment, there were no systematic guidelines regarding the subjects that should be offered; people would try to learn what was necessary, and only new subjects would be added once they proved useful. As a result, it was inevitable that most students had little clarity about their own majors. And employment is an even bigger problem. When I graduated, I went to the job market and checked out many job listings; very few companies listed materials science as a required field of study. Sometimes, even when I explained to the recruiters that my major was in materials science, they would look confused and ask, \"So you study chemistry, right?\" What should be the future of employment for those in the materials science field? I have found a job, but I applied for it under the category of chemistry. Suddenly, I realized that the gap between reality and my ideals has widened even further. I sincerely wish those who applied for jobs in the field of materials science all the best – at least they are happy! :P

There is a gap between reality and ideals, which means your ideals are not realistic, haha. Based on reality, how much of what is learned in school can actually be put to use? I think very little.
Materials science is a great major, but here I don’t want to talk about pursuing a career in this field somewhere else; I just want to tell you that in school we learn certain methods – ways of interacting with and understanding society, as well as ways of knowing how to solve problems when they arise. After graduating from university, we think about what we have learned over those four years; upon reflection, we suddenly realize that we seem to have learned nothing, and our minds still feel empty – and that’s indeed the case. Because the knowledge we learn in university is already outdated and fails to keep up with the trends of the times. The only method we learned in university is this one; it is our wealth, our pass to enter society.
The materials science major seems like a good choice, but the materials sought in job listings are different from those in the context of chemical concepts: most job opportunities relate to the application of materials, while we focus on developing new materials based on chemical principles. In this sense, it’s not particularly easy to find work in this field – though it’s not impossible either; it simply requires higher levels of expertise and specialized knowledge. As for what we actually did in college, only we know that! But it doesn’t matter; as long as you find a job to work at first and learn while working, once you have a few years of work experience, you’ll still be in high demand!
If one goes to work in a company, they should be able to handle various positions in the general industrial technology sector, as this field provides a solid foundation of knowledge. If working at a university, it’s best to join the chemistry or physics departments; though, there aren’t many such positions available these days!
Actually, it doesn’t matter what major you study; what’s important is whether you’ve learned the methods, namely the ability to analyze problems independently. This is something that most college students overlook. If you have time, it’s advisable to study logic. Once you start working independently, you will find that you use the specialized courses you studied in college less and less. Therefore, it is necessary to lay a solid foundation.
Actually, it has little to do with the major; what matters most is whether one has learned methods for solving problems and the ability to integrate into society.
I studied polymer materials, and my current work is also related to chemical synthesis. It doesn’t matter what you learn; what’s important is that you still have the ability to learn. At work, one can always learn new knowledge and innovate. .
