The slurry at the bottom of the fractionation tower in catalytic cracking units contains catalyst, which can easily cause damage to mechanical seals. When double-end or tandem mechanical seals are used, the flushing method that employs lubricating oil as a cooling medium is a circulating flushing method. The flushing fluid (i.e., the seal oil) serves only to cool and remove heat, without taking into account its impact on the catalyst within the internal seal.
