Gentlemen, within the fractures of the coal pieces there are thin layers of flaky mineral substances with a golden metallic luster; these can be seen once the coal pieces are broken open. Many pieces contain such layers – does anyone know what they are? Thank you
It is pyrite. It is a raw material for producing sulfuric acid. The slag remaining after sulfuric acid is produced is purplish-red in color; it is iron oxide trihydrate and serves as a raw material for iron production. Pyrite is heavy, golden in color, and is also known as fool’s gold.
