Dear sea friends: Could you please explain in detail the practical significance of observing tray resistance in actual operations?
The magnitude of the tray resistance directly reflects the distillation conditions within the tower; high resistance generally indicates an excessive upward gas flow or too little descending liquid. This results in a high purity but low yield of the liquid product at the bottom of the tower, while the gas product at the top has a high yield but lower purity. Moreover, flooding of the tower is very likely to occur. The opposite is true when the resistance is low.
