Most methanol reboilers these days are vertical; I was looking at some information a few days ago and found that there are also horizontal water-cooled types. Which one is better?
Methanol reboilers are all vertical, as boiling and heat transfer of methanol occur more effectively in vertical tubes, and vertical designs take up less space, making them easier to arrange; therefore, most reboilers use this vertical design. There are also horizontal types; due to their larger footprint, in addition to layout issues, their heat transfer is not as good as that of vertical types.
In the methanol distillation systems of the methanol production plants I visited, the reboilers were all vertical reboilers; vertical reboilers facilitate enhanced heat transfer and require less space, which is advantageous for equipment layout.
All the reboilers I have seen are vertical. Heat transfer should be better
Vertical designs offer better heat transfer performance. :) And it takes up less space.
For methanol plants, due to the process characteristics of such plants which involve a large number of heat exchangers, as well as considerations such as convenient pipeline layout, reduced pipeline resistance, and overall investment costs, it is most reasonable to choose vertical reboilers.
