There is often a unpleasant smell in the methanol area; I’m not sure what it is – whether it’s a substance of type S, NH3, or something else. Please advise

I’m not sure either, but it’s definitely not hydrogen sulfide. Fusel alcohol is the most likely possibility.

It’s probably the fusel odor carried over from the reaction mixture, or maybe an unpleasant amine-like smell.
