2,4-D acid belongs to the phenoxyacetic acid class of hormone-type selective herbicides; when used at low concentrations, it can stimulate plant growth and has the effect of preventing fruit drop as well as promoting fruit enlargement. When used at high concentrations, it exhibits strong systemic mobility and is primarily used for post-emergence treatment of stems and leaves to control broadleaf weeds. The construction scale is an annual production of 10,000 tons of 2,4-D acid technical material. The total investment for the project is estimated at 79.5 million yuan (equivalent to $9.938 million in foreign currency), with a construction period of about 2 years. After commissioning, the estimated annual sales revenue will be 169.54 million yuan, the average annual total costs and expenses will be 152.19 million yuan, and the average annual profit will be 17.36 million yuan. The return on investment is 21.8%, the internal rate of return on total investment (before income tax) is 23.8%, and the internal rate of return on total investment (after income tax) is 20.7%. 2,4D acid, also known as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, is produced by first chlorinating phenol to obtain 2,4-dichlorophenol; this compound then reacts with chloroacetic acid in the presence of sodium hydroxide to form the sodium salt of 2,4-D, which is subsequently acidified to yield the pure 2,4-D substance. Another new process involves first condensing phenol and chloroacetic acid under alkaline conditions, and then chlorinating it to obtain the product. The main manufacturers in China at present are Changzhou Yongtaifeng Chemical and Jiamusi Hei Nongyao Hua; other manufacturers merely use a nominal title for their operations, and even their production volumes are very small. The market was good from 2006 to 2008, with favorable prices and demand; there was also strong demand from abroad, and exports represented the best way to sell this product.
