I have a question for everyone. The copper pipes in our facility have suffered severe corrosion, with small pits forming on their surface. We use circulating water (tap water that has not been specially treated) to cool the copper pipes by dripping it in an environment exposed to air. What could possibly be the cause of the corrosion? Thank you!
It should be corrosion caused by CO2 in the air. The temperature is pretty high, right?
I had the chlorine root content in the water tested today, and it was 1000 mg/L; could this be closely related to it?
When ordinary red copper is heated in a reducing atmosphere containing hydrogen or carbon monoxide, hydrogen or carbon monoxide readily reacts with cuprous oxide (Cu2O) at the grain boundaries, producing high-pressure water vapor or carbon dioxide gas, which can cause the copper to crack. This phenomenon is often referred to as copper’s “hydrogen disease”. The CL root content in the circulating water of the poster is 1,000 mg/L, which is too high; this can also have an adverse effect on red copper. We require a CL level of 100 mg/L for circulating water; if it is too high, it will cause corrosion in all heat exchange equipment.
I would also like to ask whether the corrosion mechanism of chloride ions on copper is the same as that on stainless steel, namely something related to the destruction of the passivation film? So, in water systems containing copper, what level should chloride ions generally be kept at? Thank you
