For work purposes, I am currently working on pipeline design; the medium used is ordinary water, for use in testing instruments. Since the pipes need to be replaced frequently, I am considering using clamping connections for small-diameter pipes (DN50 and below). I would like to know what the advantages and disadvantages of flange connections are compared to this approach I hope the seniors can give me some advice! Thank you!
Clamp connections are commonly used for connecting low-pressure water pipes; they are easier to disassemble than flange connections. However, for applications with slightly higher pressures, flange connections are required in order to facilitate disassembly~
The clamping connection method possesses unique flexibility, which enables the pipelines to resist vibrations as well as contraction and expansion. Compared to welding and flange connections, this approach increases the stability of the pipeline system, making it more suitable for temperature changes. As a result, it protects the pipeline valves and reduces the damage caused by pipeline stresses on structural components.
However, the higher the pressure, the better the sealing of the pipes connected by clamps~
Flange connections are not suitable for applications where frequent disassembly is required; they are commonly used in situations with high demands regarding pressure and sealing. Clamp connections are suitable for frequent disassembly and assembly; the pipes of the pressure testing valves in our company (DN25) are all connected using clamps. But I’ve never seen DN50 pipes connected using clamps
In fact, their performance is more or less the same; one uses new technology which is convenient but whose security needs to be verified, while the other relies on traditional technology, which is safe and reliable! These days, many fire protection pipes are connected using clamps, but the main pipes still need to be connected with welded flanges! It’s mainly a performance issue!
Our maximum working pressure does not exceed 0.4 MPa; under such conditions, it should be fine to use clamping connections for the parts that are frequently removed and installed in DN50 and smaller sizes, right?
In the owner's case, it is recommended to use clamps. For fire protection pipes, where the pressure can reach 7–8 kg, clamps can also be used
Using clamps or flanges for connection works just as well; the results are similar, but each method has its advantages and disadvantages. The clamping connection method is suitable for situations where disassembly is frequent, as it is convenient. However, over time, the pipes experience vibration and deformation, making it difficult to align them properly; even a slight deviation makes alignment challenging. On the contrary, flange connections are a bit slower, but they are easier to assemble; if there is a large deviation, it can be corrected using a crowbar, and they also provide good sealing. I recommend using flange connections.
There are differences between clamp connections and flange connections in terms of usage; compared to flange connections, clamp connections offer better resistance to impacts and stress, are easier to disassemble, and require less space. However, when the distance between components is small or there are deviations, it becomes difficult to ensure a proper seal. The maximum working pressure for you should not exceed 0.4 MPa; under such conditions, it is no problem to use clamped connections for the parts that need to be assembled and disassembled frequently, with diameters of DN50 or less. Our company uses clamped connections for pipes with diameters of DN50 or less in most of its pure water systems.
In our case, disassembly occurs quite frequently – more than once a day is normal. After hearing what everyone has said, I have one concern: although clamps are convenient, I’m worried that their lifespan might not be long enough; if they deform after being used many times, it will cause problems.
With a pressure of only 0.4 MPa, clamps are perfectly suitable for this purpose. The CIP pipes in our company also have a pressure of around 0.4 MPa; pipes with diameters of DN50 and DN65 use clamps as well. Clamps are convenient when the pipes need to be removed frequently, as flanges are much more troublesome to use.
It is related to the working pressure of the medium, as well as the industry (clamps are widely used in the pharmaceutical sector), and there is also the aspect of ease of use.
