With increasingly stringent requirements for oil refining, have we abandoned the mature process methods for alkaline washing and electro-refining of gasoline and diesel?
A few companies I know are still using electrorefining. . . For example, Qinghua Petrochemical. . . CNOOC Asphalt. . . Jinling. . . Wait. . . :lol
Our company has given up on this approach. Although the alkali washing process requires low investment and has a simple procedure, the quality of the product produced cannot compare to that obtained through hydrogenation. Moreover, the alkali residues are difficult to handle, and the yield of the product is also lower than that achieved via hydrogenation
With increasingly stringent requirements for oil quality, the mature process techniques for alkaline washing and electro-refining of gasoline and diesel will not be abandoned, as they can remove some impurities and reduce the operating pressure on hydrogenation refining units. It may be upgraded to online desulfurization, which is even more significant.
I agree with the opinion above; in fact, our plant is also planning to add a post-oil alkaline washing step, as the sulfur that reduces hydrogenation corrosion was not completely removed earlier.

Electrolytic soda washing is a process with a simple procedure and good desulfurization effects. However, as environmental regulations become stricter, it is difficult to handle the alkali slag, and the associated costs are high. In particular, the requirements regarding the thiol sulfur content in gasoline are stringent, and soda washing alone is not sufficient to meet these requirements. This method is still used in smaller plants, while larger plants have switched to hydrogenation processes.
We stopped using it here two years ago; all diesel is now subjected to hydrogenation, which is necessary to produce Tier 4 diesel.
After the upgrade of gasoline and diesel products, all such fuels must undergo hydrogenation in order to meet National IV standards; as a result, the alkaline washing and electrorefining process is no longer necessary, and the three major petrochemical companies have successively shut down their electrorefining units!
Firstly, gasoline and diesel must undergo hydrogenation to meet the National IV standards. Secondly, the investment required for electro-refining equipment is high; for small refineries, there are now mature diesel acid scavengers that allow for natural sedimentation at around 50°C, so old processing methods are rarely seen these days.
