The valves installed in the system are always in motion, and to avoid the phenomenon mentioned by the original poster, some preparations need to be made in advance. The issue of valve handles falling off, mentioned by the original poster, has also occurred when operating valves in water system pipelines. Upon disassembly and inspection, it was found that the clamps and the bolts used to hold them in place had rusted and come loose. As part of our maintenance work, we replaced all the clamps and bolts for the gate valve handles with those made of stainless steel. From then on, no more mishaps occurred. Additionally, the threads of the door stem should be kept well lubricated. During valve maintenance, it is necessary to carefully check whether the door stem is bent and whether the threads are damaged; if so, they must be repaired before the valve can be reassembled for use. By doing this, I believe that there will be no major problems during operation.

The valve stem threads, which are in constant friction with the valve stem nut, should be coated with a little yellow grease, molybdenum disulfide, or graphite powder to provide lubrication. For valves that are not opened and closed frequently, it is still necessary to rotate the handwheel regularly and apply lubricant to the valve stem threads to prevent seizure. For outdoor valves, a protective cover should be installed on the valve stem to prevent rain, snow, dust, and rust from causing damage. Regularly check and maintain the integrity of the valve’s components. Do not use valves to support other heavy objects, and do not stand on valves. The valve stem, especially the threaded portion, should be wiped regularly, and any lubricant that has become dirty due to dust should be replaced with fresh lubricant; otherwise, it will affect the service life of the valve.

But what’s crucial is the subsequent maintenance and upkeep. A good start alone is far from enough; what we need is a long-term, stable operating condition!
