During the construction of our factory, since the liquid ammonia storage tank was located quite far away from the factory complex, about 2 kilometers away, the pipelines had to pass over road trusses as they reached the tank. I would like to ask the pipeline designers: when conducting strength and leakiness tests on the liquid ammonia pipelines using water as the testing medium, is it required by standards to install high-point vents and low-point drains? If such vents and drains are indeed necessary, could they pose a safety hazard in the future? How does your own factory handle this issue? If a hydraulic test specimen is used, a drain valve at the lowest point is essential; a blind flange can be installed behind the drain valve after use.
Liquid ammonia is volatile, so both high-point venting and low-point discharge are essential.
It is necessary to carry out venting at high points and discharge at low points, but it is essential to properly manage these venting and discharge points after pressure testing. In one of our company’s pipelines, poor management of such points led to an oil leakage accident, which had serious consequences. It is best to reduce the number of these points after pressure testing, and seal off some of the vent points. For those that are not used regularly, blind plates should also be installed.
Based on what you’ve described, it is necessary to add facilities for venting at high points and discharging at low points; however, during normal operation, proper management of these facilities for venting and discharge must be ensured.
