The most commonly used plastic in cars is ABS resin. ABS resin refers to a graft copolymer of polybutadiene rubber with the monomers styrene and acrylonitrile, where A represents acrylonitrile, B represents butadiene, and S represents styrene. ABS possesses the characteristics of various polymers; it is a high-performance thermoplastic that is widely used in the automotive industry, machinery industry, and instrumentation industry. To meet the varying requirements for the properties of ABS resin in different fields, people have diversified the types of ABS resin by adjusting factors such as the polymerization method, process conditions, monomer ratios, and the structural parameters of the rubber. Based on its impact resistance, ABS resin can be classified into ultra-high impact, high impact, and medium impact types. According to the methods of processing it, it can be divided into grades such as injection-molded, extruded, calendered, vacuum-formed, and blow-molded. Depending on its applications and performance characteristics, it can further be categorized into 10 types, including general-purpose, heat-resistant, electroplated, flame-retardant, transparent, sheet-forming, and tubing types. Among these, general-purpose injection-grade ABS resin has the largest market share. The largest application area for ABS resin is the automotive industry. The car dashboard is an important functional and decorative component in a vehicle. If made from steel plates, it not only results in high costs but also requires more than 10 processing steps such as cutting, stamping, drilling, and painting; whereas when manufactured using ABS resin, it can be shaped through just one injection molding or blow molding process. One of the challenges in plasticizing automobiles is the plasticization of the body panels. The body outer panels include front and rear fenders, partitions, and panels, etc.; they require the largest amount of material, and the material used must possess impact resistance, heat resistance, and rigidity. Alloys of ABS resin and engineering plastics possess these properties and can be used as materials for vehicle body panels. Automotive interior components play an important role in the comfort and safety of a vehicle. Most modern automobile interior panels are integrally molded, offering a luxurious appearance, and ABS resin is generally used for their production.

A few years ago, it was said that ABS had great potential for use in the automotive and motorcycle industries. However, after meeting sales professionals in this field, I was told that only about 10 kilograms of ABS is actually needed for use in a car (this has not been verified).
