Is a safety valve necessary for a steam drum? I’m referring to the steam drum on the pipeline; I hope everyone can share their insights!
Our company’s steam drum (leading to the heating furnace) is not equipped with a safety valve.
If a safety valve is installed on the steam main (i.e., the main pipe before it enters the drum), then according to Article 141 of the Pressure Vessels Regulations, it is not necessary to install one on the drum； But usually, as long as the conditions permit, a safety valve is installed on the drum, for safety reasons just in case! Excerpt from Article 141 of the Regulations: Pressure vessels in use within the scope of application of these regulations shall be equipped with safety relief devices (safety valves or burst disc systems) in accordance with the design requirements. When the pressure source is external to the pressure vessel and can be reliably controlled, a safety relief device does not need to be installed directly on the pressure vessel. ” For reference!
In several project examples I’ve seen, some include it while others don’t; for safety reasons, it should be included
If a safety valve is installed on the steam main, and there is no isolation valve between the steam drum and the steam main, then the steam drum does not need to be equipped with a safety valve. Otherwise, a safety valve must be installed on that drum.
Even if there is a safety valve on the main pipe, one should also be installed on the container. There is a valve at the outlet of your steam drum, which allows you to create an independent pressure-boosting system
A steam drum or steam cylinder is a pressure vessel, typically designed with a design pressure of 1.0 Mpa; therefore, a safety valve is essential! It is not something that can be optional!
Typically, steam drums on regular pipelines are not equipped with safety valves; such valves are installed on steam generators or heating furnaces instead
Normally, no safety valve is installed on the steam drum, as the equipment already has safety valves. :)
Dear sea friends: Safety valves have a very distinct character. . . An excess amount can cause flutter & chatter effects, damaging the safety valve and leading to equipment rupture and leakage. A lack of it can lead to overpressure, which in turn causes the equipment to rupture and leak. Too much or too little – it won’t work! The design of safety valves for steam drum systems and those on equipment pipelines, overpressure protection, and setting points. . . The requirements are also different. It can’t be generalized. It could be a long story. OP, the safety valves for steam drum systems have particularly high requirements. I hope you will handle this carefully. For example, find a design institute. . . From a system perspective, if there is already a safety valve in the system, it may not be necessary to add another one.
A safety valve must usually be installed on the steam main; however, if there is no isolation valve between the steam drum and the steam main, then a safety valve is not required for that steam drum. Otherwise, a safety valve must be installed on that drum. :lol
