We are currently constructing a Class A storage tank area that contains liquids such as alcohols, ethers, toluene, and fats. It refers, of course, to the water solubility of the solvent – that is, whether it dissolves in water. For example, methanol and ethanol are water-soluble, while toluene is not.
In a narrow sense, it refers to the solubility of a substance in water; in a broader sense, it refers to its solubility in polar solvents. Molecules of water-soluble substances usually contain polar groups such as -OH, -SO3H, -NH2, -NHR, -COOH, etc., or relatively short carbon chains.
