Water treatment in boiler rooms differs from that used in industrial circulating water systems. Since the water in boiler rooms becomes several times more concentrated in a short period of time, it is not appropriate to add scale inhibitors directly; pre-treatment is necessary. This usually involves alkaline treatment methods such as adding soda ash to raise the pH value, with the aim of removing calcium and magnesium ions from the water – in other words, softening the water. The total hardness should generally be less than 50 before scale inhibitors are added, so as to achieve effective scale prevention.
