Adding a certain amount of acetonitrile to the C4 fraction can significantly increase the relative volatility among the various components. Utilizing this principle, two-stage extractive distillation processes—butadiene extractive distillation and alkyne extractive distillation—are employed to remove butane, alkenes, and tetraalkynes (butyne, vinyl acetylene) from C4 hydrocarbons, thereby obtaining crude butadiene. Further secondary distillation is then used to eliminate heavier components such as C5 hydrocarbons as well as propyne, ultimately yielding butadiene suitable for polymerization purposes. Generally, there is a wash tower for raffinate oil to remove acetonitrile from the raffinate oil (butane, butenes); a wash tower for alkynes to remove acetonitrile from alkynes; a wash tower for dimers to eliminate impurities from the circulating solvent (this tower can be combined with the alkyne wash tower into one); and a butadiene wash tower to remove acetonitrile from crude butadiene
