What is the distance between oil production wells?

I work in the oil refining industry, and this is my personal opinion: I believe that the spacing between oil wells is determined by various factors such as exploration results, geological structure, difficulty of extraction, and production costs. It’s sufficient as long as wellwork can be carried out; some cluster wells are only two or three meters wide. As for how to arrange it and what the density should be, it depends on the exploration results.

The spacing between wellhead slots on offshore platforms is generally 1.8×2 meters. I don’t know on land.

The spacing between oil wells is generally determined by the underground structure; if the underground structure is relatively uniform, it is usually 300–600 meters ； There are determinant well patterns and area well patterns ； There are also water injection wells in between, with 3-point, 5-point, 9-point, and so on configurations ； But in our Shengli Oil Field, the underground structure is complex, with faults and fault blocks scattered widely; as a result, well placement cannot follow such regular patterns. In our oil production plant, the distance between wells ranges from 500–600 meters, and in some cases it’s even 800–900 meters ； In recent years, in order to increase oil production rates, water injection has been implemented; as mentioned by a netizen on the third floor, these are cluster wells. From the surface, their height appears to be 4–5 meters, though some can reach 10 meters as well. To elaborate further on the well spacing for offshore platforms: generally, the distance between the centers of two production (gas) trees at sea is 1.5 to 2.5 meters, with a common value ranging from 1.8 to 2.3 meters. For the wellhead areas drilled using self-elevating jacked-off rigs, the well spacing is 1.8×2 m. On the platforms I’ve seen so far, the spacing between wells is almost always 1.8×2m. There are significant differences between onshore oil fields and offshore oil fields, and there are also differences between vertical wells and cluster wells; it’s necessary to analyze each case on its own!
