When going to the refinery, I often hear the term \"sealing oil,\" but I never understood what it is. I would like to ask what sealing oil is, what kind of oil is generally used as sealing oil, are there any specifications required for it, what is its function, and is there a limit on the amount of sealing oil that can be used?

In catalytic cracking units, diesel is generally used as the seal oil in heavy oil pumps, with the purpose of lubricating the sealed end faces, cooling them, and also serving as a flushing agent. However, since heavy oil pumps usually have backup pumps, the sealing oil for those backup pumps also needs to be put into use. The amount of catalytic diesel seal oil used as diesel is significant; 1.2 million tons of such catalytic seal oil corresponds to approximately 8 tons per hour. This portion of diesel, etc., is essentially sent back to the distillation tower, which is not energy-efficient.
The amount of seal oil in the heavy oil pump should not be too large, as too much of it can easily cause the pump to become empty.

Additional note for Floor 3: The oil from the first line of the atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit can also be used as sealing oil. In other words, light diesel can be used as sealing oil.
As the name implies, seal oil is used for sealing; it also serves functions such as cooling, flushing, and lubrication. The choice of seal oil depends mainly on the medium that the pump is designed to transport. Even rich gas compressors use dry gas for sealing! For heavy oils such as residue pumps, heavy paraffin oil can be used; the main concern is to prevent too rapid vaporization, which could lead to vacuum conditions in the pumps!

At the refinery I visited, it seemed to be fed directly from the diluent oil, and it appeared to be included in the total feed volume. Is that the case? Is it the same in other refineries as well?
Rinse, seal, lubricate, cool. It depends on the medium handled by the pump; for example, in the case of catalytic slurry pumps, using diesel is wasteful, while using crude oil is more economical.
Our sealing oil is light paraffin oil and diesel! At the start of operation, diesel is taken from the storage area; once production is running normally, self-produced paraffin oil should be used!

For hydrocracking units, hot oil pumps – those with temperatures above 200 degrees – require seal oil to serve the purposes of cooling and lubrication. If a hot oil pump is not cooled, it is not good for the mechanical seal; moreover, smoking will occur if it is not used.
