What are the requirements regarding the thickness of the blind plates used during pipeline purging?
There are specific regulations regarding the usage standards for blind plates. However, the requirements for temporary blind plates used for steam, nitrogen, or air purging are not very high; we usually have our maintenance team manufacture them using steel plates that are 4MM or 5MM thick. If 8-character blind plates are to be used, it is recommended to have them manufactured in accordance with standards.
It’s for purging purposes; the pressure isn’t very high, so there’s no need to use blind plates of standard thickness. A steel plate of 5 to 8 millimeters thick can be used to make one manually. Of course, pre-made blind plates can also be used to save materials.

The pipeline purging pressure is not very high, so there is no need to use standard blind plates; it’s sufficient to have the construction team fabricate four thick steel plates.
For purging blind plates, the medium pressure also needs to be taken into account in the calculations; in addition, a temperature coefficient must be included. The calculation method is the same as that for pressure-testing blind plates.
The thickness of the duty section can be selected based on working pressure and temperature.
We have encountered a similar problem: the thickness of the blind plate used for parking and turning was insufficient, which caused cracks in the blind plate. Later, we calculated using the methods applicable to flat-end closures; I’m not sure if this is acceptable. Please give us some advice!
For safety reasons, it is recommended to use standard blind flanges; relevant regulations address this.
