Regarding the dead zone at the bottom of the tower: Why is there always a dead zone at the bottom of the tower? What should be the shape and size of the dead zone? The question was provided by zpalaza; please provide an answer within 48 hours, and offer proper guidance during the discussion
This is due to factors such as the reboiler structure and reboiler liquid level, which prevent a portion of the gas phase from rising to the upper part of the tower in a timely manner, thereby creating a dead zone. The dead zone should form in the corners at the bottom of the tower; I believe its extent generally won’t exceed 10% of the gas space in the tower bottom. This is because the tower is circular, and the number of openings on the tray is limited; areas near the walls, except for the center, tend to form dead zones. Thus, dead zones exist on both the upper and lower sides of the tray, and dead zones also easily form at the bottom of the tower due to hydrodynamic reasons
In the corners at the bottom of the tower, near the walls, dead zones tend to form; these areas are usually not large. In these areas, the resistance to gas upward movement is high, and a portion of the gas phase cannot rise to the upper part of the tower in time, thus forming dead gas.
Due to issues with the packing, trays, openings, as well as the volume and shape of the tower itself, the gas cannot rise upward within the tower in a timely manner, resulting in excessive gas resistance and the formation of dead zones
One is the obstruction to gas rise caused by structures such as packing support rings welded to the inner wall of the tower, and the other is the dead zone resulting from the structure of the tray and packing
