I work at a design firm, and I now need to learn about the various DCS systems available. I used to work at Honeywell, so I’m familiar with EPKS, but I’m not as familiar with those from Yokogawa, ABB, Emerson, and Siemens. I hope to get some help here. Especially, what is the strength of each engineering team?

Siemens’ PCS7 is pretty good and stable, but the customer service is definitely poor – it’s really annoying whenever I think about it.

Any of the companies listed above will work fine; there are no issues with either the hardware or software. The differences between them lie mainly in their engineering capabilities and performance levels – each has its strengths. When it comes to using such devices, what’s most important is to see whether they have extensive experience, as this can save the client a lot of trouble. The design institute can request it directly from the manufacturer, and they will provide it.

That LNG process section? Each system has its own distinct features. If your starting point in design is a preference for bus-type field instruments, especially smart meters, then Emerson DeltaV combined with FF is the ideal choice for you. In the LNG industry, this solution performs quite well at the moment. If you are used to placing the IO stations in their original locations, then the fully intrinsically safe IO stations of the S900 series from ABB represent the best choice – they offer many advantages and are safer than the traditional approach of using isolation barriers. If you prefer something simple to use and are under financial pressure, Yokogawa is a good choice. And what if you are a fan of Honeywell? It also places more emphasis on the performance of the LNG industry, so Honeywell could be a good option to consider.
For the petrochemical industry, Yokogawa is the first choice. Some of the early products are still in use after 30 years.
For a stable system, Yokogawa and Honeywell are the top choices; for cost savings, Siemens is the option to go for.
