Preprocessing issues for oxygen meters

How is preprocessing done for the oxygen analyzer in gas pipeline analysis? Is it possible to do this without washing with water?
I think the pre-treatment of the oxygen gauge is to prevent oil contamination, which could cause combustion. Water definitely can’t remove it, as oil is insoluble in water; however, it can be cleaned repeatedly using organic solvents such as carbon tetrachloride or propane until no traces of oil remain
