I would like to ask the experts: why is a threaded plug structure used for the tube box in air coolers? Can’t it be an integral tube box like that of ordinary heat exchangers? Is it related to the process of blocking tubes in air coolers? It would be better if there were drawings for reference.

The fin tubes of the main air coolers need to be expanded and welded; without holes, it’s not possible to carry out these operations. Having holes also facilitates inspection and maintenance. In some air coolers, the tubes are expanded first and then the cover plates are welded.
There is one thread plug for each tube, clearly to facilitate tube expansion and maintenance. If there are no gaskets as you said, the pipe leak cannot be repaired, because the upper and lower plates as well as the side plates on both sides are welded to the pipe sheet.
