This type of sealing structure is generally suitable for small and medium-sized high-pressure vessels with moderate temperatures. In cases where the diameter is large, the pressure is high, the temperature is high, or there are significant fluctuations in pressure and temperature, a higher bolt pre-tension is required, which results in poorer sealing performance for this type of sealing structure.

In situations where both temperature and pressure change significantly, it is best not to use flat gaskets; instead, self-sealing structures such as octagonal gaskets, Wood’s rings, clamps, and double-cone seals should be used.

Flat gasket seals have a simple structure, can be used for a long time, and their use is well-established; the gaskets and sealing surfaces are easy to manufacture. They are commonly used in containers with low temperatures, small diameters, and low pressures. As the pressure in a pressure vessel increases and its diameter grows, both the end caps and the cylinder flanges need to be thickened and enlarged accordingly, which makes them heavier. The specifications of the connecting bolts also need to be increased, and their number must rise, resulting in difficulties in processing and assembly. Therefore, flat gasket sealing is not suitable for large-diameter high-pressure vessels. Furthermore, flat washer seals are also unreliable under conditions of high temperatures (above 200°C) and large pressure and temperature fluctuations.
