This value is less affected by the relative molecular mass of the fraction, and is rather related to its structural composition; the closer it is to 0.8, the more waxy in nature it is, while the closer it is to 1, the more aromatic in nature it is. With this method, conventional paraffin-based base oils have little practical use, as more attention is paid to aromatic-based ones. Therefore, the main application area for testing is rubber softening oil. Generally, 0.8–0.85 indicates a paraffin-based structure, while values greater than 0.9 indicate an aromatic-based structure.
