Before asking this question, I think your answers will all be negative, or contain some underlying implications. We are engaged in environmental impact assessment, and it is necessary to have an understanding of chemical processing techniques. We need to identify every point where pollutants are generated within the production process, based on those techniques; not only qualitative analysis is required, but also quantitative calculations, so that appropriate environmental protection equipment can be selected. I studied the processes at this chemical plant today; maybe I’ll have to study other plants tomorrow as well. It’s extremely exhausting. I completely agree; there aren’t many people in factories who truly have a thorough understanding of the manufacturing processes, and even if they do, they might not tell you. It seems it still depends on oneself
I first studied chemical engineering processes; I spent 10 years in a research institute, and then studied environmental engineering. Currently, I work on the research and practical application of high-concentration chemical wastewater, and I find it quite manageable.
I agree with you as well. I have a colleague who studied environmental engineering at the undergraduate level and chemical engineering at the graduate level; he now works in environmental assessment and has a good understanding of many aspects related to chemical engineering – he can grasp them right after someone explains them to him. As for me, with a background in environmental engineering alone, it’s too difficult to understand things related to the chemical engineering field. I don’t even know what many of those devices are. Environmental impact analyses also need to be conducted on various raw materials and auxiliary substances to check for any significant pollution!
I feel the same way; when I went to the chemical plant to see the facilities in person and asked the chief engineer about the factory’s production process, he only had a general idea and didn’t have a comprehensive understanding. Some even say it’s a patent, so it can’t be mentioned. But this has caused a lot of inconvenience for us environmental workers. The fundamental reason why many organizations are reluctant to speak is the fear of saying something inappropriate and thereby giving you an excuse to use against them. I wonder how many companies dare to claim that their environmental practices are problem-free. One must work harder themselves and come to Haichuan to learn more in their free time*.
I can understand this, and indeed we can’t blame the people in the chemical industry. However, if there are mistakes in our approaches to environmental protection related to chemistry that lead to problems later on, it will be our responsibility, and such issues can turn out to be quite serious. We’re in a difficult situation. That’s why I come to Haichuan whenever I work on a project, to learn about the chemical processes involved in that project. I think the main problem at the moment is that environmental assessment agencies should not constantly point out the environmental issues faced by enterprises; instead, they should actively help these enterprises solve those problems. That way, chemical companies will welcome them wholeheartedly! ! Currently, environmental protection authorities frequently visit enterprises to enforce regulations and identify problems; once such issues are found, they promptly impose penalties and issue notices. And the environmental impact assessment reports also serve as a basis for their enforcement actions in the future. You see, certain companies that have more or less problems, and even those without any problems (out of fear that issues might be detected), become a bit more cautious! Therefore, I have always believed that when the administrative authorities actively help businesses solve their problems and serve them proactively, rather than finding faults and deliberately creating obstacles to threaten them, then a harmonious relationship will surely be achieved!
In our company, safety and environmental protection are handled by one department. I am a certified safety professional and a safety assessment specialist; currently I serve as the safety supervisor. However, my knowledge of environmental protection is insufficient, so I plan to take the exam to become an environmental assessment specialist next year. I hope to exchange more ideas on this topic.
I have also done environmental impact assessments, and I think this issue reflects the tragedy of environmental impact assessments. As an environmental impact assessment is a multidisciplinary task, it inherently emphasizes collaboration. These days, environmental impact assessments are generally carried out in one go, with one person being responsible throughout the process. The credibility of the environmental impact assessment work is bound to be called into question.

I don’t like them, because most of the time they just issue fines; they can find any excuse to deduct points from your account and impose fines. The amount of money they earn is not proportional to the actual help they provide to drivers. The issue between chemical companies and the environmental protection community is one of cooperation and trust. Not all companies follow the requirements outlined in the environmental impact assessments, after all, environmental protection investments represent a significant expense. That’s why cameras have been installed in the wastewater treatment areas of some large chemical plants; it is a measure taken out of necessity. Also, those of us who work on environmental impact assessments have very little contact with environmental monitoring personnel in our work. We are only responsible for the initial assessment of the project; they, along with other departments, handle the subsequent services. But if environmental accidents do occur in the company later on, and our report doesn’t mention a single word about them, then we will bear significant responsibility. I commissioned environmental impact assessments for several projects, and the assessment firms requested a large amount of documentation. It seems that aside from the professional aspects related to evaluation and the environment, all the materials were provided by the project owners. Sometimes they complained that despite all the work done, they didn’t receive any payment for the environmental impact assessment. There might be a slight bias in the perception.

In fact, most of what you need to know about the person being investigated has to be learned on your own*. In that way, you can take targeted action! Most organizations are indeed a bit conservative towards EIA staff, that’s my personal opinion!
An environmental impact assessment is a report prepared based on the information provided by the enterprise, along with the guidelines for environmental impact assessments.
