Compressors can be driven electrically or by turbines. Those driven electrically include centrifugal, reciprocating, and screw types, while those driven by turbines are of the centrifugal and axial flow types. I’m not sure if this understanding is correct
A turbine refers to a turbine, that is, a steam turbine, which is a type of driving device! Similarly, a motor (electric motor) is also a driving device! Therefore, for compressors, they can be driven by turbines or by motors. As for centrifugal, reciprocating, and screw types, these refer to the structure of the compressor.
From a functional perspective, compressors can be divided into two main categories. One category is known as dynamic compressors, also referred to as turbine compressors; these include centrifugal compressors and axial flow compressors. Their common feature is that mechanical energy is converted into kinetic energy, which is then converted into pressure energy; One category is known as positive-displacement compressors, which include reciprocating, rotary, screw, vane, and Roots types. There are many subcategories within this broader category, but their common feature is that they all increase pressure by changing the volume of the cylinder. The drive methods for compressors include electric motors, steam turbines, gas turbines, expanders, as well as a combination of steam turbines and electric motors. Among them, steam turbines and gas turbines are collectively referred to as turbines, which comes from the English word turbine.
