In the SSR process, from sulfur production to exhaust gas treatment, only sulfur production burners and exhaust gas incinerators are used; no online furnaces or any heating equipment powered by external energy sources are employed in the intermediate stages. As a result, the number of equipment units and control circuits required is less compared to similar processes, which leads to lower investment costs, reduced energy consumption, and smaller land requirements. There is no process description for online furnaces; no additional inert gas is introduced into the system, which results in the total amount of process gas being 5–10% lower compared to similar processes using online furnaces. This leads to smaller equipment sizes, as well as relatively lower levels of exhaust emissions and absolute emissions of pollutants such as SO2. The SSR process uses externally supplied hydrogen as the hydrogen source, but it does not require high purity of this externally supplied hydrogen, which gives this process wide applicability to sulfur recovery units in petrochemical enterprises.
